Good morning! This late March Monday is brought to you by Jack Frost today, 25 degrees with a stiff breeze. Whatever happened to 'coming in like a lion and going out like a lamb?'

Sharon's editorial paragraphs: Never before has CT looked so forward to Spring after record setting snowfalls and an unforgettable period in February where many many farms lost their roofs due to snow load. We had one part of our roof where cars are parked that has an area of lesser support beams that had to be cleared but were thankful to avoid a worse threat. Thankfully we are on high ground so flooding spared us as well when the inevitable melt came.

Other updates include Nicholas' father feeling well at home, recovering from his health scare this winter. Do you all remember my feral cat we discovered sleeping on top of one of the lesson horses 2 years ago about this time?? I will find the photo of it and update you on her progress in a future blog. If you know me, you know that I love my cats and she has a good story to tell.

Nothing like a foal to make it feel like SPRING!
The riding academy is bustling and busy with our wonderful, dedicated students. Once a month our riding pupils have an unmounted lesson on various stable management and horse management themes. This past week we had a field trip to a neighbor's farm to visit his brandy new 4 day old Morgan stud colt by MEM Sambuca! Here is the handsome fella sticking close to his proud Momma.

What a pretty little head ! And a giant bold white star. Welcome to the world future Champion.....

To our delight we witnessed some wonderful foal joy & cavorting under Mom's watchful eye.

Catching up!

Well, today I hope to catch you up on all of the news, time flies. It's been a while since my last entry. It feels like we are going full speed, and it's not even show season yet!

Monsoon, begone! Last night, we went to sleep listening to the wind howling like a hurricane, day 4 of that along with 4-5" of flooding rain. Good thing we're at the top of the hill, for those in the lowlying areas haven't been so lucky. We have a few horses that live outside & I worried about them, but a saving grace was that it was warm. This morning we woke to calm, birds, the sun rising and 55 degrees, a balmy day with a few in a row on tap. YES!

Horse shows are coming, entries are in, and we're already looking ahead to late Spring and early Summer entries! Such an exciting time of year. Can't wait! Our show horses and riders have been working very hard all winter, away we go!

We took a group of the show riders and academy riders to a schooling show across town last weekend. Check out the smiles on the happy faces below:

Everyone had a blue ribbon except Sam, but he hung in there til the end in Egg & Spoon! Good job, buddy & congratulations to all of our riders. Happy memories!

For many it was their first horse show. I will never forget mine, it took place in a field next to an airport with a snow fence for a riding ring and entries were $3 a class. I got a second place ribbon that I still cherish. At the time it was a huge accomplishment to get that far, to get into the ring, doing what I enjoyed so much with the reward of a prize. Still the same decades later. :--)

Ladies' Night has been swell all winter. Such a fun place to let off steam with the other gals, get a good riding lesson to help w/the basics and increase stamina. And let's face it, lovely to get out of the house in the winter. Last session was big fun with a short Zumba Class. Zumba is a type of dance aerobic exercise and it was really fun and catchy!

First riding............... then here we are: the Zumba crew! Did Nicholas chuckle at us? What do you think?!

Today's Nor'Easter & my PROOF that Spring IS coming

Well, today it's a classic Nor'Easter, a significant low off of the Mid- Atlantic Coast. Here's a photo after about an hour of snow flurries taken around 7am

I'll post another one later. Predictions have thundersnow coming and accumlations of 3" an hour possible!

And at 10 am! Look at the fat flakes by the lens....

and beginning afternoon chores....the fence posts are disappearing!

This morning, I had the rare opportunity to turn out a horse who had never seen snow! I have a pretty good clue on this because he got one look at what was falling out of the sky and his eyeballs got as big as his nostrils which got pretty expanded and noisy and he didn't take those eyeballs off of me as if to say "WHAT THE ??? Well, I have no idea why the lady doesn't seem to be worried that the sky is falling I'll just be cool here & follow her lead she gave me a peppermint yesterday and is the center of my universe." His eyes & body language defied his inner dialogue. Horses, particularly Saddlebreds are smart and brave. He learned quickly by watching me that I wasn't a bit worried and that the world wasn't coming to end no matter that all evidence was to the contrary. Being the smart Saddlebred that he is, he will retain it.

Today's one of those days I wish that those who think American Saddlebred show horses stand trussed up like a turkey all day long in dark stalls could see some in action defying those old wives tales. Come see us on a Nor'Easter day with many turned out with straight unset tails, short feet in turnout blankets getting a few hours in before the blizzard force winds start. Just being horses. Same ones challenging the best to grace the winner's circle shortly at a competition near you! Show horses......

Lots to do today- every year I volunteer for the show committee to order ribbons & trophy coolers for UPHA Chapter 14's Spring Premiere Horse Show in April and today's the day the order goes in. The company we work with gives a 10% discount for orders done prior to Valentine's Day-keeping costs lower for the horse show, and ultimately passed on to the exhibitor! Right on, right?! RIGHT!

Villa Stables is happy to offer our February 2010 school vacation week Frosty & Fun Farm camp to kids ages 5-15 from February 15-19. Participants will complete farm chores, have a mimimum of 1 DAILY horseback riding lesson, then journal on much much more in shared experiences & themed days throughout our private & pastoral equestrian center.

Dates: Monday 2/15---Friday 2/19 9:30am - 3:00 pm*
Fee: $250/wk ($25 discount if signed up by 2/2)
Advance payment arrangements can be made/billed or accepted in 2 installments.
No specialized equipment or apparel needed: just long pants, sturdy boots/shoes & horse fever!

*Special Mon/Tue agenda/prorated fees for N. Stonington students!

Our agenda will include:

Riddle Running Day! It's a mystery! And so much FUN! Children, in groups, get a riddle- which leads them to their next activity/learning center, which in turn gets them another riddle leading them to the next activity & so on- for the entire day! With prizes for quickest, most accurately completed, and best perseverance on our day of tasks, it's a lot of learning, quick-thinking, running & fresh air.

Celebrate the Morgan Horse Day! Spend it with Laurelledge Moonbeam, VHF Tiffany & MPA Legacy Lives On............."Wait, who?"....................... You know and love these show horses- but probably only by their barn names- Blue, Tiffany & Nine! Here we will spend the day with these beautiful Morgan Horses and learn all about them: from markings, to their conformation and traits & what makes the Morgan Horse a wonderful part of our lesson program here. We will compare them with horses of other breeds and types we also have here on the farm & discuss their suitabilities based on how they've evolved & what they've been designed for over centuries.

*Horse Health Day! A visit from the vet & the blacksmith occupy much of our day with tours of their respective offices on wheels and Q & A sessions with live demonstrations. We'll see how a shoe it custom fit and find out how to take a horses vital signs and much, much more.
*Day of the week subject to change based on the unfortunate event the vet/blacksmith has an emergency elsewhere.

Games Day! Everyone's favorite! Learning is FUN! Mounted & unmounted games for all abilities and ages challenge our skills, and promote teamwork. We'll even play a horse themed board game at lunch! Our American Saddlebred horses want in on the action so what better a day than games day to learn about horse shows & competitions?

From 55 to 13 degrees with a 30 mph wind! What a difference a week makes!

On Monday we had sideways rain and mild temps. Today the only thing going sideways was an empty cardboard box that blew off my deck and away like a flash sideways into the wind! What a difference a few days makes.

Our yellow kitten is missing as of last night. We tucked him into the barn late yesterday afternoon & he did not show up for breakfast. He's 7 months old, if you're reading this & know about cats could he possibly have hit the road looking for a girlfriend? I'll wait for him to come home before I make that phone call about neutering, if he gets wind he'll surely be hasta la vista. I hope he's OK. I've looked everywhere including tack trunks, rafters and every bin we have. Don't ask me how I know to look there...........Anyone fellow alum Wilson Women remember when Zorro kitty spent the weekend in Jeannine's tack trunk? When she got home from the Burgh for the weekend and opened the trunk to get a treat for Rocky out leaped a very aggravated Zorro! YOWL!~

We are again hosting a February Vacation day camp the week of 2/15 and I'll post the details here. North Stonington schools do NOT have a winter week off this year. North Stonington students that wish to attend are welcome on just Monday & Tuesday and we will prorate fees accordingly.

Nicholas found yellow kitty outside, he must have been shut out this morning when we turned horses out! But here's the kicker. Nicholas found him in the stone wall in the hollowed out nest where he was born! Smart little guy....... Be it ever so humble, there's no place like home. He was loud, alert and HUNGRY! All's well that ends well.

Low pressure coming through New England during the midday today- looking out the window to blustery wind and sideways rain. The horses are all tucked in & some who have a choice are standing outside in it! It's one of those mysteries of life with horses on why some of them choose to stand in the weather no matter how awful it is than what we perceive to be the haven of shelter. After thousands and thousands of years of evolution it's just one of those things you don't mess with with horses. They as a rule have such a strong self preservation intinct that you just gotta leave it alone...

Right now we're looking forward to Ladies' Night on Thursday Feb. 11th with a fun Zumba session of Latin Dance & aerobics! Ladies' Night is educational and always fun! By popular demand we are calling for the Ladies' Night Men's Invitational as well, so the boys are welcome this time too! Please contact me for a ride or drive time on the 11th.

February is Frosty but FUN with a day camp during school vacation week 2/15-20. Cost is $250 for the week with a discount of $25 to those who sign up prior to 2/1! Please call for more information.

Nicholas and I greatly enjoyed an afternoon (into the evening!) of football for the AFC & NFC Conference titles last night- up to the wee hours for the nailbiter between the Vikings & Saints. I am so happy for the City of New Orleans- to see such elation and joy in the Superdome was so ironic to imagine it was also where people lay dying when it was underwater just after Hurricane Katrina. I was just like the spectators last night rooted to the spot that couldn't leave their seats after the game. There was some magic to it, for sure. 16 seconds or so from the Vikings attempting a close range field goal and then to winning a coin toss & a making a lengthy field goal attempt. As competitors ourselves, with a love for all sports, we were riveted.

I was up late reflecting on it last night and remember so well we were shipping horses home so happy from the World's Championship Horse Show in Louisville that year as Katrina was hitting to the South. We had stopped in a rest area off of the NY State Thruway & stood soberly surrounded many other travelers watching the radar on a television as the storm literally descended upon the city of New Orleans.

It seems so funny now that our phones all can get the radar for any city in the world basically yet back in 2005 we had to rely on a Rest Area tv tuned into the Weather Channel to get the latest. I'd also like to point out that I'd love to be a fly on the wall if Jay Leno & Brett Favre had a chat this week about retiring while still on top. But I digress.........

Back to the drive home from Louisville 2005.......I thought about the Jazz band that peformed a couple of nights earlier at the horse show during the retirement of the beautiful American Saddlebred, Americana's Jazz Man. The band was from New Orleans & talk about charisma! Next to the beautiful Saddlebred showing off in his final performance they both brought Freedom Hall to its' feet all the way to the rafters! I wondered what the band went home to after that retirement ceremony- and I thought about them again last night.
"Laissez les bon temps rouler!" And on we go.....

Also thought about legendary (#8 on the NFL's list of all time characters in the league!) NFL coach E.O. "Bum" Phillips who resigned from the New Orleans Saints the day after winning a game (ironically) against the Vikings who said:

"Winning is only half of it.

Having fun is the other half. "

A very busy week!

Busy & Happy days around the farm!

Thursday we had a super Ladies' Night with a large attendance. If you haven't come to one of these fetes yet, you are missing a super good time. We had a large group of very enthusiastic riders. Ladies' Night rides (and drives!) work on the basics, and strength & balancing exercises on mostly lesson horses. Here and there we do a show horse demonstration under saddle, or driving. After riding, we convene to our cozy lounge by the fire for a light supper, desserts and a guest speaker of my choosing. We have had equine nutritionists, massage therapists, a horse communicator, and for this month: a comfort food theme: complete with Stacey Hewes, our Pampered Chef Consultant, Saddlebred Rescue Cookbooks for sale, and a light supper of Golden Mushroom soup, Warm Moscatelli pasta salad with feta and roasted vegetables done by Sneekers Cafe in Groton, CT followed by Polynesian Pineapple Surprise & Raspberry Fudge Trifle for dessert by Denis & Stacey respectively.

A man dropped in! Anything goes at Ladies' Night!
A "standing" ovation............. Upon exiting the restroom our January token man cleared his throat and proudly proclaimed to the room......... "I'd like to make an announcement please! The seat? Is DOWN. I am 76 years old and I can be trained." He brought down not just the seat, but the house to roars of laughter! We are considering a Ladies' Night Male Invitational for Feb. 11th! Write your thoughts in the comments section!

Our next Ladies' Night is Thursday, February 11th. We will ride, enjoy a light supper & have a short demonstration by Raeleen on "Zumba!" It's a fitness program using resistance training, latin music and dance, where the motto is "Ditch the workout, join the party!" Sounds good so far!? We're looking forward to giving it a try. The one second from the left (below) is excited to pack another outfit!

On Sunday I traveled to Massachusetts to judge one of the UPHA Chapter 14 Winter Tournaments @ High Tail Acres Equestrian Center, and had a lovely time. The Deltorichio family and their customers graciously hosted the tournament & opened the barn, sparing no detail on comfort to horse and human, to 60+ riders and 8 participating stables. It was very rewarding to see so many young people & adults so enthusiastic about their riding & deliver a showing of their best skills. Each rider really tried their best from tall to small. Some had butterflies, some didn't- all worked through the nipping cold with smiles & their best efforts and most importantly sportsmanship & a love for their horses.

Highlights for me were the singing of our National Anthem- a wonderful way to start the program & sung in an outstanding fashion by a pre-teen High Tail Acres tournament rider, the leadliner who answered (correctly) what her stirrup was called who afterward looked truly puzzled on why the lady judging didn't know what a stirrup was :-) and of course, the FABULOUS food. Hey these are MY highlights, after all.

Monday was a day off of school in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and we had day camp here at the farm! Up & at 'em for another long day. So worth it though, two days with horsey-kids is a learning experience & inspiring! One long talk we had on Monday was how is that we can put so much energy into hours of work at the barn with no complaint but find it difficult to summon a speck of enthusiasm for even five minutes cleaning our rooms?! The answer was unanimous .........."Because it's the BARN!"

Oh how I remember how time flew at the barn when I was a kid & what a haven it was. How I loved everything about it. The sight, the smells, the sounds, and most importantly time with the horses. It was a dream as a child to spend the day at the barn.

Things you don't find playing X Box: The kids found this perfectly symmetrical birds nest sewn with horsehair from each horse in the lower barn: beautiful

We made many discoveries at camp & worked on vocabulary, safety skills, bareback riding, did balancing games and winter grooming strategies. Big fun at the barn!!

I was happy to sit down and enjoy a steaming bowl of Annie's matzah ball soup! The soupmaker sits down with Jessie for a well deserved and wonderful hand massage. We all enjoyed Jessie's array of professional treatments.
Susan did such a GREAT job in her lesson that we won't scold her about sitting up for the picture. LOL
Gretchen is always a lot of fun and Ladies Night is par for the course.

Well, now that I have your attention, Happy April Fool's Day!

I do have big stray cat news, though! The update on my feline friend is that when I call her as I put out her feed she comes running to me eagerly and lets me pet her while she eats. She is definately a tortie in color and therefore female, and has a swing to her belly which I am certain is not the rations I've been putting out. It's probably kittens..... And she's "my" cat, she runs away from everyone else who ventures out that way. I'll try to take some more pictures on a nice day.

Oh and she has a name: Perry. The real Perry, is a friend of a friend and wrote the movie Mystic Pizza (filmed just down the road!).

Speaking of kittens, June will be busting out all over, because *both* of our minis are in foal! Nicholas and I took the winter blanket off one of them for a driving lesson and WHAMO she was weeble shaped- we both were like "Uhhh oooh". Bobette, and Patti and I all bought minis in October and at the time we knew the 2 mares had been with a stallion for 30 days but had no idea if they were in foal. Well. It looks like they are.

Bobette's mini, Pumpkin an adorable adolescent colt that's pinto in color is in therapy training! While we work the show horses we often see Bobette teaching Pumpkin tricks and working on the clicker training- and hear the pitter patter of little teeny hooves in the lounge as he learns about furniture, and carpet. Nicholas gives the eye roll and shakes his head but we all know he secretly thinks it is a hoot! Nicholas, ya softie!

Congratulations are in order to Patti Shanafelt on her acquisition of Amber One Up for the American Saddlebred Hunter Country Pleasure Division. Cater Stables assisted as the agent. Amber is a huge gorgeous chestnut mare with a white face, and she's a joy to have around.

Kimberly Martin of Warwick, RI is joining our show string and leasing the gorgeous campaigner Hero's Legend of the Knight. Kim is fun to have with us and a joy to watch spending time with this great gelding.

The UPHA Chapter 14 Spring Premiere Horse Show is coming fast! We are bringing 10 horses and have heard that turnout and entries are up and very promising. Can't wait to be back in show season again. Good times, great rides, great friends! It's been an especially long winter!

Ladies Night this month is April 9th, next Thursday. The last one was a complete success- we sent out two trail rides of ladies over to the vineyard. The farm borders the Jonathan Edwards Winery, (www.jedwardswinery.com) whose property used to be part of this farm, so we have an easement and permission to ride there. It is so beautiful and more than once after the ride we have packed up and driven over (with a designated driver!) by auto for a glass of their finest chardonnay, such fun! They make Napa Valley wines here in CT. We always meet the most interesting people there and they love the horses.

Kitty Cam?

I have had requests for Kitty Cam! Well, wow, that would be hi-tech for the fields and rock walls of North Stonington, so I'm blogging an update.

A friend thinks that due to the color, possibly a tri-color, we have a she-kitty on our hands, first of all. Secondly, I was out there over the weekend and our wild kitty went FLYING out of the highest level of the hay feeder. She was sleeping in the hay there while the horses ate, so that must be her house!

For the past week or so we've had a visitor- a tiny and wild adolescent grey striped tiger kitty. Nicholas keeps tabs on his whereabouts and said he thought he was living out by the lesson horses somewhere. Well, as evidenced by photos (albeit far away!) I took this morning, he's turned one of the lesson horses into a cat condo!

I had a wonderful time last Sunday officiating at the UPHA Winter Tournament horse show held at Cater Stables. Kristen, David and Mary are great hosts. There was a great turnout and Mother Nature blessed us with mild temperatures. I had great fun working from the center of the ring with ringmaster Gary Saccocia, Jr. who many of your know is half of our amazing dental team of Dad and son. Gary Sr. and Jr. are the finest professionals and wonderful friends.

"MB" worked so hard all day to get it all right: the timing, the light, the emotion, the moment that we all love to see captured (especially Moms and Dads- I can say this as a horse show Mom!). You can lose yourself in all of MB's beautiful images, take some time to check out her portfolios.

Check out the future of equitation! All of these tots were able to tell me where their heels are supposed to go, what those funny silver things their feet go into are called, and what color their horses were. More than a couple looked at me like they were surprised a grown up didn't know what color their horse was, which was unexpected and made me laugh!

Maggie has everything in place perfectly! Mom & Instructor Kim Timmons of Afterthought Farm brought several riders out who showed equal form and poise.

Johnny Lettre showed us all how hard he has been working on his posting this winter. Mom Sarah looks on- in a rare moment of holding still! Sarah does a phenomenal job organizing and coordinating the Chapter 14's Winter Tournamnent Series.

Oh except for this one below of "Baby Girl" Cater! I took it. Hence the tail only half in the photo. Horse show fans, do you remember the tiny days old abandoned kitten found abandoned out behind one of the back barns during Big E 2008? Kristen adopted her and literally brought her back to life. As Mrs. Spann explained to me that she's become "half dog and half human". She is a member of the family, is thriving and adorable!!!!!

We've been having a great time, improving our riding in a supportive fun environment, working on strength and balance exercises to launch us ahead for show season and trail riding days ahead.

Ladies Night featured a seminar with Jaclyn Gallant, our Equine Nutrition Specialist at Nutrena. She explained the choices we make for our horses and the superiority of it over other programs based on predispositions and needs of performance show horses. Jaclyn offers us wonderful support. One of the services she offers is testing the quality and composition of our hay, which we appreciate. Kit took home information shared by Jaclyn. A majority of our Ladies Night participants are horse (and donkey!) owners, who not only keep them here but set up horsekeeping at home.

Every one very much enjoyed the information she shared with us on Thursday and left with all of our questions answered.

This is about the saddest thing I've heard in a long time.

A man named Bob Skelding, from Deerfield, NH where we travel frequently to horse shows, went off last fall in a custom made wagon and 4 Percherons to travel across the country. He was struck by a tractor trailer in Mississippi yesterday, two of his beautiful horses were killed & the other two trapped in the wreckage for some time. Bob is in critical condition and family members are lucky to be not severely injured.

It's been a couple days of preparation, unhooking hoses, checking windows for seals and drafts, giving extra hay and making sure everyone has fresh running open water and so far so good! Our barn has not dipped inside below 35 degrees which is wonderful and the horses' exercise and work can continue business as usual. A routine is important with horses and keeping a regular turnout, feeding and work schedule is your best friend during crazy weather fluctuations.

The worst business has been outside. We got a couple hours of rain on Tuesday night that flash froze later in the evening and left a glaze on everything out doors. Everyone is watching their step & it looks like that won't melt anytime soon.

I learned that I fumble unloading grain sacks with winter gloves on- is it just me? Am I the only one who can't get the usual grip and positioning to get the job done? Is this a phenomenon? Probably just me and a habit. In the end I ditched the gloves and had it unloaded in half the time. Think of those August days where we hear "Ugh it's so humid! It's too hot to ride!" haha

Whew- it's been a whirlwind the past couple weeks with a lot to catch up on. Our 2008 barn Christmas party was loads of fun- with a Yankee Swap

peals of laughter as we played Nicholas' favorite game: Kick The Broom (James, you definately won!),

a warm fire, the annual DVD slide show (trying to figure a way to upload that here-would love suggestions), and yum-O eats on the new portable Weber gas grill- thank you so much that was a wonderful surprise! "Santa" brought Nicholas a new grill, a new bicycle for me, and Sam a John Deere Gator just in his size. How's that for a trifecta?

It was a fun fun night and a pleasure to see everyone.

With this cold the horses are definately needing their layers and I always like to praise a product when I can- especially one that's durable, practical, and well priced. JP's North in Greenville, NY sells a 1200 Denier nylon/med weight poly fill turnout blankets priced at 2 for $125. They have cushion at the withers, leg straps, heavy front and surcingle buckle hardware and are waterproof. Similarly priced at other places for $100 and up for one alone. I can always get at least 2 seasons out of these blankets under heavy use and the worst of conditions, leak proof- I love them. Check em out at http://www.jpsnorth.net/

The bad news of 2009 is that Penn National Horse Show dropped all American Saddlebred divisions. When the call sounded to rally around it we did- and enjoyed doing so GREATLY and we're extra sad that it's going to be gone. If you're reading this, please consider showing this year at Devon- as valuable an experience as Penn National was, Devon is all of that and then some and needs your support as well. Please come and fill the classes I guarantee you'll be glad you did.

Jessica Moctezuma is USEF's Junior Exhibitor of 2008

Jessie has been awarded the top honor as Junior Exhibitor of the year by the US Equestrian Federation, our national governing body for all equestrian sport in this country. Truly this is a distinguished honor and one deserved in full by this wonderful young woman we are proud to call a friend and consider call a member of our extended family. She's means a lot to all of our riders** for her support, sportsmanship, friendship and cheerleading. **(Ask Portay about "channeling her inner Jessica Moctezuma" prior to heading thru the gate! )

This year, at Louisville as the riders rode for their ribbons in the esteemed Senior Equitation Championship, Jessie displayed the most outstanding display of horsemanship I saw thoughout the entire week long 2008 Kentucky State Fair World's Championshp Horse Show. After a grueling class of more than 45 minutes of length consisting of rail work, periods of retirement and individual testing- her young, new equitation partner tested her the most at the very end- during her individual work- "Elvis" lost his concentration a bit- perhaps saw the outgate as they were headed in the direction, I am not sure -Jessie read it- stopped in between elements and before pushing him to the next one- stopped under the biggest pressure of her life, breathed, and put her hand on his neck for a couple of moments, gathered her reins and went flawlessly into the next move. That bloggers, is HORSEMANSHIP. The horse first. Without the horse as priority # 1, the ride is nothing.

The last few years of her practice have been hundreds of hours on hundreds of throwaway horses- American Saddlebreds that were plucked from the pipeline for slaughter. Saddlebred Rescue Inc. picks these animals up, sick-thin- and down on their luck- then rehabilitates and schools them for placement to good homes as solid citizens. Jess's mom Nealia McCracken houses a branch of SBR at their farm in New Jersey and Jessie has been an important part of the process to save them as SBR's #1 "Crash Test Dummy" test rider.

When Jessie rode out of that class back in August, she did so, with her 8th place (oh someone will correct me if I am wrong here I don't remember the color) to an ovation rivaling a rock star- good girl, Jess. Congratulations on the final award of your Junior Exhibitor career being one exemplifying the most important thing of all- your horsemanship over a period time. Congratulations to Nealia and Mark and Mayo and everyone at Northwind.

A Funny Thing Happened at The Feed Store

A funny thing happened at the Feed Store.

The following phone call came in from Fleming Feed & Hardware-our feed store- home of the best support best team on earth- Jim, Rob and Sean at the Stonington branch & Jaclyn from Nutrena make my life easier on more levels than I can describe. I see them more frequently than my family, my vet, and my blacksmith combined.

"Hello?"

"Sharon, it's Jim, I have some fantastic news."

"You do?"

"Yes, you won the drawing."

"The drawing." ???

"Yes, you won the raffle!"

"The raffle." ???

"That's what I said! You're the big winner of a big prize!"

"Big Prize." ??? "Jim, are you feeling all right?"

You get the idea here. Jim insisted I won the raffle and to leave room for a large pick up when I came in on Wednesday. Naturally my radar was up and suspicions heightened but no amount of my grilling got him to fess up.

The next day on a run to the feed store, Jim presented me with the raffle ticket. (see below)

As tempting as the diet soda was, I went with the 48" barn wreath.

Thank you to my "Secret Santa", I love you (whomever you are) for knowing where I shop, for the gesture, for making us feel appreciated, shopping locally, and most importantly making me LAUGH!

Equine Affaire was a blast!

Yesterday was a whirlwind. It was up before daylight and home after dark- for an away day! As you know from the previous blog entry we brought Caity and Willy to represent the American Saddlebred Country Pleasure Horse at the ASB demo at Mass. Equine Affaire. We had a ton of fun and Willy was bright eared and beautiful. Caity rode great.

The performance took place to the coolest music, choreographed by Rae Lynn Funkhouser who is the Executive Director of the Franklin School of Performing Arts in Franklin, MA. Her husband Bob Funkhouser from Saddle Horse Report, was our breed coordinator and kept everyone organized, upbeat, and perfect! Any other breed demo would be moooooore than fortunate to have that team of professionals putting together their performance!!

It was a quick demo, we had about 10 horses to showcase in 15-20 minutes so individuals had had 2 minutes in the ring to do their thing. That is NOT a lot of time! Everyone packed in all the gaits in that short time, reversed, waved to the crowd and all. Each horse was turned out to perfection, and all of the horses looked like the best that American Saddlebreds could be. Versatile, bright, athletic and heart stopping!

We shopped for a short time- it was crazy and overwhelming. I bought one thing and one thing only. If you can guess what it is, I'll take you on a trail ride. Hint: 10, 40, A-5. No it's not clippers but related and the BEST INVENTION EVER.

This is what Equine Affaire is all about : Getting your ass to the ring on time.

Superfun. Caity and Willy stopped by the Big E's booth in the Better Living Center and found themselves on a poster! Look closely for her seafoam day coat!

Sister Act! Sharon Alemian and Lillian Gilpin showcased Sharon's beautiful five gaited mare LA Lady Pedro. They were a crowd favorite racking and slow gaiting. Courtney Cahill is noticably absent (Sharon and Lill are looking for her?) after she assaulted the back of Nicholas' head with spray glitter. Nicholas it certainly made you sparkle!
I stopped by the ASHA sponsored breed booth in the Stroh Building and saw Ricky Drew from ASAM all smiles as usual-a great supporter of the ASB and the most pleasant and enthusiastic guy you'll ever meet. I also met Mark Strong and Susan Vine who coordinated the booth. They worked so hard to make it possible-great job all.

The worst thing we saw was literally upon arrival, we pulled the trailer around the barn to unload and there in the parking lot was a down horse, and a sizeable crowd- it looked grim and it was. The horse had been euthanized moments earlier. It was no one we knew but our hearts broke for them of course just the same. A professional group quietly assisted, including Nicholas, helping move the horse so it could be transported away- as gently as it was their own dear friend. Horrible thought and ironic among thousands of enthusiasts that this was happening behind the scenes of the demos and seminars, but it's a reality in dealing with these animals we love. Accidents can happen and they do.

On that note, it was a day of highs and lows- and an unforgettable day for a lot of reasons. We arrived home pretty tired!

First-Ever ASHA Sponsored Presence at Massachusetts Equine Affaire

Lexington, Kentucky – On November 13-16, 2008, the American Saddlebred Horse Association (ASHA) will sponsor a breed booth at the Equine Affaire event, being held at the Eastern States Exposition Center in West Springfield, Massachusetts. Equine Affaire, the nation's premiere national equine exposition and equestrian gathering, organizes four days of clinics, seminars, demonstrations and exhibits, with an expected attendance of tens of thousands of horse people.

An Evening of Champions!

Saturday night we attended at the annual ASHA of CT Year End awards banquet hosted by the Wethersfield Country Club. Congratulations to our horses and riders on a great year, and what fun it was to get together and celebrate.

The Connecticut High Point Farm award was won by Villa Stables! What a rush! Congratulations to our wonderful riders and our wonderful horses- this award goes to YOU!

Some highlights from the evening:

Patti is decked out to the nines celebrating her Academy Championships!
Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus and Portay does have a husband! Here is none other than the Big R- Richard- sharing a laugh with The Boss.

Elena swept the Juvenile Country Pleasure Division and won the ASHA's Award as their State Champion- congratulations! Elena also accepted the award for UPHA Classics Champion for CT with Tornaado's Fiz.

Versatility, beauty, grace and manners! No, not Bob's manners- Beau's! Kathleen Osnoe and Harlem's Beau Dandy won both the Fine Harness Champion honors as well as the Show Pleasure Driving top honors along with the ASHA's State Award.

The Shanafelts are a handsome bunch! Happy Birthday CAITY!!!!!!

Annie won Championships in two divisions with the one and only DB.

Bobette couldn't be with us due to a committment for tennis but we were proud to collect Mr. Rockefeller's two driving awards- Reserve in the Country Pleasure and Champion in the Open Pleasure.

And our Sympathies to the Dunn family who lost Ellie's father mid week. Patsy was a dual Champion in Academy Walk and Trot this year, in her first year off of the leadline. Hugs to you all and our thanks and congratulations during a rough week for you all.

We wholeheartedly congratulate our adult Amateur competitors Kim and Erika who received year end high point awards at the Tri State Horseman's Association annual banquet and celebration last Saturday night. The Tri State shows are held in Oneco, CT and are a huge three day affair that goes all day and sometimes into early evening- with a healthy number of entries and multiple rings.

Nicholas and I were proud to attend and enjoy a night of laughs and memories of their successful show season with VHF Tiffany and PM Al a Wishta. Congratulations girls! Erika and Kim do their own shipping and showing at this wonderful local circuit and ship in to us for lessons- which is a whole lot of hard work. Nicholas Villa Stables moves onward, upwards and indoors!!!!

We're happy to announced that we've moved onwards, upwards and indoors.

Villa Stables has retained a facility just across town to the beautiful 105 acres of 75D Reutemann Road in North Stonington, Connecticut. The facility boasts pastoral privacy that few barns in Southeastern CT have today. Over 30 acres alone is grass turnout space with secure shelters. There is a tack room with hot and cold running water and laundry facilities, a large feed room, an immense 70 X 40 vaulted Lounge with entertainment amenities (Devon Club 5-7) hardwood floors, heat, a restroom and breezy shaded portico overlooking the beautiful fields. There is an INDOOR 110 X 60 riding track, and two outdoor riding rings with all weather footing. There is an on site residence for us as well as what will be eventual staff housing.

We're thrilled to be able to offer year round indoor riding, and evening lessons when necessary.

Come on over!! The next few weeks will be busy, we're still moving and settling in and would love to see you. Rumor has it there are blog pictures of moving day....

For those who've been inquiring, Miss Bunny is doing great! She is off the leash at the barn all day long and is a jewel about sticking around close by and not going underfoot, no jumping barking, running off. Crate training is going beautifully & Bunny is so smart and affectionate. You can't resist her. She greets visitors warmly and is happy to see everyone. It's nice to have a dog around the barn again.

Nicholas and Bobette say she is going to be smarter than Hilda ever was. I just can't wrap my mind around that. I just flash them the ol' eye roll- smarter than Hil? In the words of Vizzini from the Princess Bride: INCONCEIVABLE!

Why do I like horses?
I reckon I must be mad.
My mother wasn’t horsey
And neither was my dad.

But the madness hit me early

Last year for my birt hday

One eye’s always on the heavens
But my washing waves in vain
As I rush to get the horses in

And though they’re wearing 15 rugs,

I bring them in to keep them dry
While I get soaking wet.

I spend up every cent I’ve got
On horsey stuff for sure.
I buy fancy rugs and fancy rugs,
And then I by some more.

I should have had that hair cut
Or bought that nice blue shirt
At least it wouldn’t be now
Ripped to shreds and in the dirt.

I can’t make a bloody sponge cake
I don’t even try
But I can back a car and trailer

We are very proud of all of you- and a great time was had by all!

The Big E is a fun place to show. Now that the Saddle Horse show opens before the Fair does the move-in day is a snap and move out is the same old lovely Jed Clampett load up the tractor jam to the exit- but a great time is had by all. At what other horse show can you compile a chowdown on a Maine lobster roll AND a RI Del's lemonade followed by a VT apple crisp with a cool slice of Cabot cheddar? Only the Eastern States Exposition as far as I know! The show committee makes a nice hospitality area for everyone's comfort- where we watched everything from Ike's progress to the Patriot's game and Carol Keller always has a smile for everyone.

A long night last night with an overnight power outage, stifling humidity (NO fan or air conditioning during the outage!) just the sound of driving rain and rattling winds all night long. The storm was gone by 3:45 AM, power came back on about then, and I woke up at 6 to zero humidity and brilliant blue skies! Last night seemed like 72 hours and a full season blowing thru in just a few short hours. The barn, the horses and everything fared just fine, for which we are grateful. Our thoughts are with those battening down the hatches for Ike.

Back to business! I promise "small" exciting news tomorrow!

Everyone's Monday Morning quarterbacking everything post Louisville 08 from the judging, new stabling, the parties, the Cafe, and even there are a few tears from those who were sad to take their last dip in the Exec. East's pool (the hotel is being torn down this winter).

One of the hottest discussions right now is whether are not stripping horses for conformation is important, and relevant anymore especially in juvenile performance classes.

Here's something that is under my skin and it's somewhat related to stripping. This is not directed at any individual specifically but in general. What bugs me? The extremely unprofessional and dangerous trend of attendants in the ring during time outs and to strip horses wearing flip flops and/or sandals. I'll leave the strappy evening gowns alone for now- but proper footwear has to be paramount.

Want to get your own feet crushed? Fine I suppose. But what if your horse or rider/driver gets in trouble and you're practically barefoot? Are you fully prepared to jump in? Are you in the best position to keep your rider/driver/horse safe as well as the other exhibitors in the ring?

Is it going to take someone's foot getting broken/stepped on and mangled for proper footwear to be mandatory? Wait- there's already language out there....

USEF rule SB105 says attendants must be suitably attired and no more than 2 in number- OK bloggers, in your opinion, are sandals and flip flops suitable attire?

Home safe and sound, it was a fantastic week. We got busy later in the week as the week gets longer the competition gets stronger. As did the heat, and all of the activity. The Fine Harness divisions have been exciting: Lady Vol won the Ladies Championship with Joe Friday and Along Came a Spider yet to show back there are more great harness horses to come the next two days.

Nicholas and sat and watched the show with a dear old friend Sarah Liebert Garner, her husband Chris, SBR supporter and friend Karen Stine and Sarah's little baby Meg! Nicholas had Meg watching the horses on the Jumbotron it was so cute.

Elena gave Tom Moore's boot a polish for luck for tomorrow Morning!

Wednesday- a busy day

No more tents! This is where tent stabling used to be. It used to be a good 10 minute hike to the show ring. And a flood zone after the ever present afternoon thunderstorms!

After Elena's exciting ride, it was a full day of celebrating and horse showing.

In Wednesday night's performance one standout was Along Came a Spider. This leggy black harness mare brought the crowd to their feet screaming, it was like you were at a rock concert: she certainly is a rock star.

The amazing cobtail mare Fancy Ribbons retired- her connections put on a beautiful retirement ceremony that Nicholas nephew Berto was a part of, and after the show there was an exhibitor reception back at the barn. We went over for a sample of the lovely buffet and found Berto handing out treat to the pony's many fans. For those of you know Berto and this picture will attest, Berto is the clotheshorse of the Villa family!

This is a neat perspective. Stopher Walk is under the roof pictured below-it's the famous chute that the horses enter to get to Freedom Hall. You warm up in here, it's about 50' wide so you have a horse on each side warming up, and amazingly I've been in here warming up with 15 or so fine harness horses and you are not on top of each other. have no idea how long it is, it's VERY long. The first picture faces the road and toward the back barns and back warm up ring. The new North Wing is to the right with the dark brown roof (see press release above).

The reason I included this pictures is that I am photographing from the new skywalk that leads to Freedom Hall ABOVE Stopher Walk. In past years, fair exhibitors and everyone had to cross this chute among plunging, trotting, excited horses trying to warm up. Now everyone takes an escalator in air conditioning up and over the horse walk! Nice improvement! No golf carts allowed in the North Wing barns, hence the pack of them to the right- no one is complaining though because at least it's air conditioned the moment you step in.

Star of this Year’s Show? The New North Wing!

Louisville, Kentucky - The most noticeable standout at the 2008 World’s Championship Horse Show (WCHS) may not be a horse at all. By week’s end, the most talked about newcomer at this year’s show might just be the new North Wing of the Louisville Fair & Exposition Center.
According to Alan F. Balch, Executive Secretary of the American Saddlebred Horse Association, and former president of the national equestrian federation of the United States, "I've been fortunate to see equestrian facilities all over the world throughout the last 40 years or so from a professional standpoint, at just about every level of competition including the Olympic Games. The amenities that have been added to these show grounds with the addition of stabling, schooling, commercial, and restaurant areas in the new North Wing -- all adjacent to an arena like Freedom Hall -- would be the envy of any equestrian competition anywhere. For the Commonwealth of Kentucky to make this investment in support of the horse sports is a supreme tribute to the importance of Kentucky's signature industry."
The East Wing, originally constructed in 1956, was cleared out to make room for construction of the new and notably enhanced North Wing. From start to finish, the project took 18 months to complete, beginning with the removal of the original East Wing in March of 2006, and concluding with the North Wing’s completion and opening in October of 2007. According to Kentucky State Fair President Harold Workman, the project came at a cost of $55 million, and if the multitude of positive feedback is any indication, this was money well spent.
Although the North Wing was built on the site of its predecessor and has virtually the same square footage, this is just about where the similarities end. The original East Wing required the support of 96 columns to support the structure, and utilities were accessible only through the ceiling. The superior structure standing in its place today is supported using only six columns, offers floor access to all available utilities, and boasts a 27-foot high ceiling with state of the art lighting (click here for image).
In addition to the North Wing is the North Lobby, which consists of 35,000 additional square feet, bringing the entire North Wing’s total square footage to more than 250,000. All told, with the opening of the new North Wing in October of 2007, the Louisville Fair & Exposition Center offers a total of approximately 825,000 square footage of Class “A” Space. Not only does this addition better serve the needs of WCHS and its patrons, it also makes the Center a very attractive and viable national competitor for other such high profile events.
One of the many driving forces behind the idea for such structural enhancements was to better accommodate the needs of events such as WCHS. This year being the first occurrence of this event since the opening of the new North Wing, it has already proven to be a considerable asset for horse show participants and spectators alike. One pleased patron was Jennifer Dixon of JL Dixon Stables, in Atherton, California. In comparing the stabling conditions to being outdoors in previous years, Jennifer said, “It has been wonderful! The ventilation in there is great and the air conditioning is fabulous.” Jennifer also noted the positive impact of the improved conditions on the horses themselves, saying, “The horses are happier, they are brighter, it is really just much better because it is climate controlled and we can breathe.”
Another horsewoman, Lynn Harvey McNamara, of Wethersfield, Connecticut, whose family has been showing here in Louisville since the 1950s, initially expressed concern about the climate-controlled environment. “Our horses are not used to air conditioning for the most part. Most of our stables are not air conditioned, and going from air conditioning to heat can cause a lot of metabolic changes.” Once inside the facility, however, Lynn was ultimately satisfied with the conditions, saying, “I think the Fair certainly addressed that. I am sure they talked to veterinarians, and they talked to owners, and they realized how important it was that this building not be frigid cold, and they could set the temperature according to the desires of the horsemen.”
Overall, Lynn was impressed with the enhanced facility, and said, “I would say that we are thrilled with this, with this new innovation in this new venue that they have offered exhibitors (click here for image). I think that people are pleased. And certainly from the point of view of somebody who has shown here for fifty-some years, I think this is a major improvement to this horse show and they (Kentucky State Fair) should be commended for it!”
In addition to housing 824 stalls for stabling horses throughout the show (click here for image), the new wing offers ample room for multiple vendor exhibits where one can find anything from riding equipment to horse trailers. Adjacent to these vendors can be found the Saddlebred Café (click here for image), which offers patrons an alternative to the typical fare. (click here for image).
A finishing touch of the new wing is the pedway constructed to give patrons a safer and more convenient route of travel as they come and go. Underneath one end of the pedway is Stopher walk, which allows the convenience of passing through without braving the horse traffic. On the opposite end, the pedway opens up into the North Lobby, with escalators conveniently located at each end.

Monday's competition was deep- a long great day of horse showing

I was able to see quite a bit of the show today- the equitation classes were well filled. Congratulations to Jessica Moctezuma and "Elvis" with a nice third place in the 17 year old age group.

We loved seeing "Squiggs and Yimmy" making a tremendous show to a second place finish in an amazing Adult Show Pleasure class, great job guys!

Lady Vol was the showstopper last night in the Ladies Fine Harness in possibly the best performance of the night. A big dark bay mare, she was the picture of precision and power. One of the nicest horses I saw all day yesterday.

Bustin' Out took a second in the Junior/Stallion 5 gaited class last night and was the crowd favorite. He's an amazing horse and I rememer Mike Setzer from the National Horseman talking about this horse last year- making waves out west- well here he is, the talk of the show. This was an amazing class, huge and they brought 10 back out on the rail and worked them again. He was the crowd favorite- a crowd in KY is never afraid to tell who THEY are with- several times last night the crowd made different ties than the judging panel.

The also had 10 or so do further work in the Amateur Ladies 3 gaited Under 2 and put them through their paces twice. It was a class of about 18 and this surprised me, as the classes in Lexington are this size and not usually split or given additional work. It makes for a nice horse show as you're getting to see more and more of these amazing horses- on the other hand you more frequently see judges making a quicker decision.

The weather is hot but nothing like last year. All is well and Louisville is wonderful and amazing and the quality is as always, outstanding. Oh and I saw Kim Cohen in the chute yesterday! Happy times!!!!

Sunday Night starts with weanlings

The first World Champion of the show! I'm in Heaven with Joan Lurie. I'm in Heaven is by the amazing Undulata's Nutcracker. Nutcracker's connections donated a stud fee to Saddlebred Rescue last year netting them $12,000. Congratulations, all!

I believe this was the 2nd place weanling I am the Storm.

Kalarama's Personality Plus is stripped for confirmation on Sunday night for the KY County Fair World's Championship- he was the eventual winner in a nice class.
Mary Gaylord McLean makes a beautiful victory pass with Cherished King. Her husband Jeff won the very next consecutive class with a lovely pony. The judges in the forefront are seated for a few moments before the next class.

Good weather, a great show shaping up to start tonight

Nicholas was happy to have a couple of special visitors on Saturday- his sons!

The weather in Louisville is predicted 85-90 with no rain for the whole week which is lovely for the World Championships, last year it was 100 in the shade with big thunderstorms almost daily in the afternoons. This kind of weather makes it nice for horses especially when ours have shipped a great distance. Heat can be such an additional stressor.

It's different this year without the tent stabling and I'll try to get some pictures, the tent area is a huge parking lot which is nice for horse show participants there is a lot more parking. We are stabled inside the North Wing which is adjacent to Freedom Hall and Stopher Walk. The tack vendors, custom clothiers, Polly, etc are set up inside this area as well. The only downside to it seems to be that Fairgoers are coming through in droves thinking it is an exhibit hall. There's mulch and wood chips down with mats and tar paper underneath but I've seen a horse or two slip-nothing that I haven't seen even on dirt- but it's a little scary with strollers and unsuspecting public that close to the show horses. It's the weekend so foot traffic is very high, that'll go down during the week.

Next to the vendor areas is The Saddlebred Cafe. White tablecloths, waiter service, dining in a very attractive area with a bar and plasma TVs which is steps away in air conditioned comfort. I'll try to get some photographic evidence of that as well. Everyone is watching the Olympics and so far so good!

Louisville 2008 Diary Day 1

Greetings from the World Championship Horse Show! We have arrived safely after an uneventful (and long) overnight drive. We are all enjoying our home away from home stabled in the new air conditioned North Wing. Previously this was an exhibit area, it's just adjacent to Freedom Hall. Moving in and out was hard work figuring out the unloading areas and best routes- the heat was not fierce today which is nice for KY in August. The North Wing is now stabling, and is neighbored by an all horsey commerce area with tack and everything horse related and the Saddlebred Cafe- a white tablecloth full service dining area. Good night!

A fine week is in the books for the 2008 Connecticut Summer Classic Horse Show. Thanks to organizers and everyone who worked so hard in the heat (and humidity). Partial proceeds of the horse show benefit Saddlebred Rescue Inc., (http://www.saddlebredrescue.com/) which is a wonderful cause.

There is a wonderful aspect to this show for children with lots of activities geared to them daily during the school summer vacation period which makes things attractive to the younger set.

Maybe I am wrong but this year it seemed there were a lot more Academy riders- filling every class plentifully. It was great to see, I just had to pass on NR's mudslides at the exhibitor party the night before w/the early academy wake up call!

Ginny visited!!! We missed you honey, you were a joy to have around, thanks for all of your help.

If you're reading this and you stay in W. Springfield for horse shows and related events I highly recommend the Hampton Inn on Rt 5, we've never stayed at this particular one before and it was reasonable and very nice: including touches like an outdoor pool (in August! Yay!), cute daily surprises/perks from housekeeping, free hi speed wireless internet, and a complimentary expansive breakfast buffet. Ask for the horse show rate!

Here's how the week went: congratulations riders and drivers. From cookies and milk, to seeing so many of you meet your goals: it was a blast.

Kathleen Osnoe and Harlem's Beau Dandy were a crowd favorite in the Show Pleasure Driving division at CSC- congratulations on an outstanding performance people are still talking about!

Pleasant travels to Children's Benefit Horse Show brings successes back to CT!

Congratulations riders! We are returning from a wonderful trip to Quentin PA for the 19th annual Children's Benefit Horse Show.

Elizabeth McCracken debuted Mr. Rockefeller in his first Country Pleasure drive against the best of competition, garnering a top 3 ribbon and a Reserve Grand Championship- already a stunning combination with only a few short weeks together.

Annie and DB earned top 3 finishes in the show's largest and most competitive division with a reserve tie in the Open Adult pleasure divisions to boot. Go Annie!

Patti and Hero earned two blues in the Saturday morning Academy divisions- you can't miss this combination (or Patti's radiant smile), great job!

We happily motored thru the countryside when we weren't inside the ingate on the stonedust of the beautiful Quentin Riding Club's show ring- the great hospitality of the show committee and the bounty of that Lancaster County has to offer made it a great trip.

In honor of the upcoming Olympic Games! LOL Olympics!

We just completed a fun, local weekend show at Falls Creek Farm in CT. We had a great time and everyone got some good practice that is close to home. It is so nice to try something different once in a while and it's a day where everyone shows on the same day (in multiple classes!) so it's a great opportunity to get to see how everyone's coming along and support one another. Thanks to everyone who came out to cheer, support and help, it really was a blast!

Annie and DB are a blur, still kind of a cool picture! The only thing NOT a blur was the show schedule! Check out the clock that it's rounding 4:30 and the day is long from being over!

Bobette and Mr Rockefeller debuted with 2 blues and a third in three (defensive) driving classes in a large Open Pleasure driving division that featured everything from soup to nuts to 2 carriages that had nothing on Ben Hur- roaring, chain clanking, thundering honestly it sounded like a tornado crashing by! Congratulations to Nicholas and Bobette to getting this team in the ring so quickly and effortlessly.

Hello bloggers~ we're home from a one day show today (i.e. read: dark-thiry to dark-thirty) and what a fabulous day: new beginnings for young and young at heart, well earned ribbons for the veterans and tons of joy, support for barnmates and lots of laughs-Thanks to ALL you are a wonderful team. More blogging to come on this one but I'm off to find 2 advil and a big glass of water!

Nicholas Villa Stables is thrilled to announce Elizabeth McCracken's purchase of "Mr. Rockefeller!"

Mr. Rockefeller aka "Nelson" is a son of the wonderful Talent Town (sire of CH Mr. Snuffleupagus, CH Polo Town, CH Candle Dan, CH Ramses etc) and out of Sultan's Candy Kisses who is by Supreme Sultan and was bred by Ruxer Farms. As the former trainer for Ruxer Farms Nicholas worked with Nelson's sire and dam and started many colts from those lines.

We congratulate Bobette on the acquisition of this game, sharp horse who is no stranger to the winner's circle with an outstanding record in the Northeast as one of the winningest Country Pleasure horses around as well as ribbons at Louisville.

Thank you to former owner Patti Bartsch and former trainers/agents David & Kristen Cater of Cater Stables in Dunbarton NH in helping us to find this grand horse.

Watch the pleasure driving divisions for this fine gelding with Bobette on the lines.

This is maybe the 2nd coolest German Shepherd dog in the world, 2nd only to sweet Hil'

Every barn has favorite products and remedies and I figured I'd share them once in a while. The best product you are probably not using for bumps, scrapes, abrasions and minor boo boos is.....

Dionne Povidone PVP Iodine Ointment

We like the properties of iodine, and this surpasses the duration of an iodine scrub treatment alone. The PVP ointment has the consistency of a thick vaseline. It stays on longer while providing a beneficial moist healing against the skin which is ideal with many abrasions especially those in hard to treat areas. It won't drip or run off in areas where gravity is not your friend. It also keeps a longer lasting barrier against more germs invading the site.

How does it work?

Povidone iodine belongs to a class of antiseptics known as iodophores. These chemicals exert their antiseptic effect by slowly releasing iodine. It is also used for the treatment of fungal and bacterial skin infections and pyodermas and in the treatment of infections in decubitus and stasis ulcers (bedsores and leg ulcers). In the presence of blood, serum, purulent exudate and necrotic (dead) tissue, its action persists while the colour remains.

In case you missed it!

Great thanks to Northgate Stables, Miscoe Meadow and Rocking Horse Farm for hosting their annual fabulous Belmont Stakes party at the Twin State horse show. The food was delicious and they drew a large appreciative crowd. Nicholas sends his compliments to the ribs chef!!!!!!

The remarkable thing I witnessed, after watching this race, was the collective casual reaction of the large group of very experienced horsemen at the party, who at the end of the race had the same quiet grin and a shrug of: "Well, that's horses!" Sometimes, that's just the way it goes. You play this game for the love of the animal and the joy of putting your heart into the best performance you can. It's definately about the journey not the destination!

It was on with gusto for the battle of the barns and the kids ramping up for the jog cart races: Julius Fairfield Caeser versus Pirates of the Carr-RMD-ibean!

The Devon Horse Show

One of our favorite horse shows of all time- Devon. Even we relax for a moment a two-taking in the beauty, tradition and history!

Devon is a very special place. Please put it on the calendar for next year already, the ASB and pony divisions need your support. Thousands of volunteers work the Devon Country Fair giving it a very special handmade homespun feel. There is a small midway for the children. Small touches are everywhere-that cater to the exhibitor, the spectators, the children, the horses. On Thursday night this year, attendance topped 40,000 people. Louisville, Penn National, Devon these are the places to show in front of a crowd, it's electrifying. There is no show ring more beautiful than the Dixon Oval.

The fine for going the wrong way down a 1 way street in Devon, PA is $175. Whoops! That was going to be an expensive trip to retrieve a whip! Thankfully it was forgiven...

The race was on to Minella's at 2am! Nuff said!

On Thursday during the morning lull we visited friends who are a fellow farm family. A beautiful day without a cloud in the sky means the hay need to be raked (the most gorgeous hay in the world I might add!)- but these friends do it with REAL horsepower- 4 beautiful Belgian mares, check out one of the middle mares, exceptionally sized and beautiful. (For the record, his mom OK'd the photograph).

Congratulations to this amazing group of ladies who stabled with us at Devon and performed each evening with a vaulting exhibition. They are working toward qualifying for the FEI World Equestrian Games being held at the Kentucky Horse Park in Fall 2010.

Sarah and her mom (and coach) Nicole, who are natives of France, quickly fell in love with the American Saddlbred even pitching in and running with a towel in hand to help and cheer on everyone's classes. We had a wonderful time learning about each other's discipline and passion. Sarah- I told you I'd put you in the blog! Wink wink- we may just get to WEG to cheer you on in the Fall of 2010.

PS You cannot appreciate fully the immense SIZE of this horse in the demo- what a good boy-he is a 15 year old Selle Francais who was bred for this sport specifically I do not dare try to spell his name, you'll hear it in Peter Doubleday's audio.
